Washington, D.C.—Today, the House Ways and Means Committee considered U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett’s (D-Austin), Ranking Member of the Health Subcommittee, Resolution of Inquiry into Elon Musk and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) hostile takeover of the Treasury Department’s payment systems. Republicans on the committee voted to keep Musk and DOGE’s actions secret, including likely violations of federal law.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) reintroduced the Farewell to Foam Act, bicameral legislation to phase out single-use plastic foam food service products, “loose fill” such as packing peanuts, and non-medical disposable coolers – materials known to cause harmful health effects and pollute waterways. This bill prohibits the sale and distribution of these items beginning January 2028 while aiming to support the transition to alternatives.

Rep. Deborah Ross (D-N.C.) and Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, led a letter to IRS Acting Commissioner Melanie Krause Wednesday blasting the firings of the new hires and the lack of transparency on where the cuts are happening. These Democrats also asked for clarity on how the IRS plans to mitigate the fallout and what the impact of firings are on compliance and the collection of revenue.

President Donald Trump’s new tariff hikes on Canada and Mexico will affect many states and congressional districts he won in the November election — starting with Texas. The Lone Star State, which Trump captured with 56 percent of the vote in 2024, is especially vulnerable to tariffs on Mexican goods. Its two-way trade with Mexico was $272 billion in 2023, or about one-third of total U.S.-Mexican trade that year.
