With bipartisan momentum building in the U.S. Senate for a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s immigration system, President Obama laid out broad principles for reform Tuesday, declaring “most Americans agree that it’s time to fix a system that’s been broken for way too long.”

According to data from theTexas Department ofFamily and Protective Services, 231 children died from abuse or neglect in Texas in 2011, representing a 124 percent increase in the past 15 years.
"Texas has the highest rate of child abuse and neglect fatalities in the nation," Doggett said in a statement. "The Protect Our Kids Act will help provide thoughtful consideration of the steps we can take to better protect vulnerable children."
Just because few Doggett-sponsored bills have become law doesn't mean he has been ineffectual, said James Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin.
