The expanded Child Tax Credit, a cornerstone of the American Rescue Plan—which I helped pass into law, though without a single Republican vote—is delivering financial support to roughly 90% of American families. Beginning in July 2021 and running through December 2021, qualifying families will receive monthly payments. Most households should begin seeing their monthly payments automatically after Thursday, July 15 with no further action required. However, a smaller number of families – mostly those who earn so little they don’t normally file tax returns – will have to register to get their child credit payments.
