Austin community leaders and elected officials said Wednesday they are disgusted with the killing of eight people in Georgia the night before — most of whom were of Asian descent — and are calling on others to condemn violence and hate crimes against Asian Americans.

AUSTIN, Texas — The City of Austin's Equity Office said it has noticed an uptick in Asian American hate crimes similar to what's happening in other parts of the country, such as vandalism at an Asian-owned small business in San Antonio. Some parts of the community in Austin tell KVUE they're hoping more people educate themselves.

On March 11 President Joseph Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 into law. The $1.9 trillion bill, introduce on Feb. 24, was voted largely along party lines (220-211 in the House, 50-49 in the Senate).

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), a member of the Ways and Means Committee, and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Finance Committee, introduced the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act to close egregious offshore tax loopholes that allow companies with armies of lawyers to avoid taxes by making profits earned here in America magically appear on the books in tax havens like the Cayman Islands. It would also crack down on the type of illegal tax evasion by the superrich that was revealed by the Panama Papers and Paradise Papers leaks.

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) and Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), joined by Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Jack Reed (D-RI) and over 100 House members, introduced the No Tax Breaks for Outsourcing Act. The bill would level the playing field for American workers and small businesses by making sure multinational corporations pay the same tax rate on profits earned abroad as they do in the United States. This would end tax incentives created by the 2017 Trump tax giveaway bill to send jobs and profits overseas, and generate significant revenue to fund priorities like infrastructure.

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chair, led colleagues in introducing the Medicaid Report on Expansion of Access to Coverage for Health (Medicaid REACH) Act to require official disclosure and verification by states, like Texas, of the data identifying who suffers when they continue denying their citizens health coverage financed with federal dollars to expand Medicaid coverage.
