Reversing Trump's Effort to Lock Texas into an Uninsured Future
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chair of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, just released the following statement reacting to the Biden Administration this afternoon rescinding a ten-year Medicaid Section 1115 waiver extension that the Trump Administration had rushed through in January:
"The 1115 waiver process is intended to facilitate better help to more—not to waive access to health care as Republican leaders have attempted to misuse it. Today's rejection of Trump's last-minute, premature gift to Abbott is an encouraging development for all of us seeking to overcome the deplorable distinction of having more uninsured citizens in Texas than any other state in the nation. Excluding reasonable public participation, this rushed Trump waiver represented an attempt to lock us in to a decade of minimal progress toward reducing the number of uninsured Texans. While ultimately Texas will require a waiver consistent with the true purpose of this federal law, this must be accomplished through a transparent process with the goal of securing health care for many more of our disadvantaged neighbors."
