They explained who can expect payments automatically and how much is coming—as well as how parents who do not normally file a tax return can ensure they do not miss out on these important payments and get free, bilingual help from Foundation Communities. The video of this press conference is available here. Rep. Doggett has published an FAQ webpage for families’ questions, available in both English and Spanish here.

The expanded Child Tax Credit, a cornerstone of the American Rescue Plan—which I helped pass into law, though without a single Republican vote—is delivering financial support to roughly 90% of American families. Beginning in July 2021 and running through December 2021, qualifying families will receive monthly payments. Most households should begin seeing their monthly payments automatically after Thursday, July 15 with no further action required. However, a smaller number of families – mostly those who earn so little they don’t normally file tax returns – will have to register to get their child credit payments.

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of President Trump’s trip with Governor Abbott to Hidalgo County this week, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) led all Democratic members of the Texas delegation in an effort urging Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to protect the Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Funds available for Texas under the American Rescue Plan—and ensure that Governor Abbott cannot nefariously divert recovery funds into his sideshow of building portions of Trump’s ill-fated wall. Governor Abbott has directed that $250 million be taken from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a “down payment” for the wall and as of last Wednesday, he reported having raised only $459,000 in private donations for the wall.

WASHINGTON — Texas Democrats in Congress are irate that Gov. Greg Abbott can divert federal funds intended for COVID-19 relief to build a border wall. On Monday, they asked Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to step in and block the state from using any of its $15.8 billion windfall for this “costly monstrosity.”
