US lawmakers are pushing for a ban on fuel imports from refineries that use Russian crude oil, as researchers suggest such transactions have bolstered Russia’s tax revenue by up to US$275mn so far this year.

Sanctions already prevent companies from importing Russian crude oil and petroleum to the US, but there is no restriction on importing fuel from other countries even if Russian crude had been used in its production.

Washington, D.C.—In a surprising new email obtained by Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin), Governor Greg Abbott’s Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) offers only a raffle and “6 Days of Merry Service” to resolve the growing backlog in Medicaid and SNAP applications. Beginning today, an overburdened and demoralized workforce must complete 15 hours of overtime in six days to be entered into a raffle, on top of an already mandated monthly 20 hours of overtime required during the past three years. Today, Rep. Doggett is again urging Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure to fulfill federal enforcement responsibilities and require a comprehensive corrective action plan from Texas HHSC, implemented under federal supervision, to ensure timely assistance to Texans in need.

This comes as the Biden administration is trying to broker a deal to release dozens of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a temporary ceasefire. That would allow for more humanitarian aid to flow into southern Gaza — a chief demand of Biden’s critics.

“No state does a worse job at renewal than Texas”

A new report from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families found the number of children insured under Medicaid in Texas and elsewhere increased during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

But with pandemic-era continuing coverage ending, those numbers are declining as part of the so-called “Medicaid unwinding” removing otherwise qualified people from the program, which is also the largest insurance program in the country for children.

Washington, D.C.—As countries around the world convene at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin), joined by 12 Members, urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken to address critical oversights currently missing in the Zero Draft text of an internationally legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. Specifically, the Members push for robust criteria to identify and phase out single-use plastics and implement rigorous measures to prevent and remove secondary microplastic pollution. The Members also call on the Administration to work with known big polluting industries—from tire manufacturers to textile producers—to determine best practices in addressing the root causes of secondary microplastic pollution.

Former president Donald Trump denigrated his domestic opponents and critics during a Veterans Day speech Saturday, calling those on the other side of the aisle “vermin” and suggesting that they pose a greater threat to the United States than countries such as Russia, China or North Korea. That language is drawing rebuke from historians, who compared it to that of authoritarian leaders.
