DEMS WARN AGAINST TEXAS CLASS VI PRIMACY: Seven Texas Democrats are warning EPA not to hand over permitting authority for carbon sequestration wells to the state of Texas, arguing the state agency charged with overseeing the industry has a “sorry history of lax regulations and enforcement.” Texas is among several states pursuing primacy over so-called Class VI wells as EPA struggles to speed up its permitting process, even as the fossil fuel industry and the Biden administration are turning to carbon capture to meet their climate goals.

Texas Congressmembers Urge EPA to Hold Texas Railroad Commission Accountable on Carbon Storage Wells

Washington, D.C. – As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reviews the Texas Railroad Commission’s request for primacy over the state’s carbon storage infrastructure and protection of underground sources of drinking water, U.S. Representatives Lloyd Doggett (TX-37), Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Greg Casar (TX-35), Veronica Escobar (TX-16), Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Al Green (TX-09) and Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), urged Secretary Michael Regan to address major gaps in the Commission’s ability to meet minimum requirements in protecting Texans health and safety. Specifically, the members ask for a transparent evaluation process that considers the proximity of wells to vulnerable communities and environmental justice impacts, public engagement in multiple languages, and an emergency response plan to plug leaking wells.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nursing home workers and advocates from across the country, alongside members of Congress, sounded the alarm on America’s nursing home staffing crisis Wednesday as the for-profit nursing home industry ramps up attacks on measures intended to help ensure safe staffing, quality care and good jobs. Following the House Ways and Means Committee's approval of a bill to prohibit minimum staffing requirements and the introduction yesterday of a Senate Congressional Review Act to repeal the Administration’s new staffing rule, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (TX-37) and U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) joined together with nursing home workers and advocates from AARP and Consumer Voice to send a clear message that safe staffing saves lives. Student protesters: I admire your empathy for Gazans, your concern for the world, your moral ambition to make a difference.
But I worry about how peaceful protests have tipped into occupations of buildings, risks to commencements and what I see as undue tolerance of antisemitism, chaos, vandalism and extremism. I’m afraid the more aggressive actions may be hurting the Gazans you are trying to help.
