Washington, D.C.—A day before the State of the Union address, the House Ways & Means Committee adopted H.R. 7513, a bill to undermine the Biden Administration’s promise to deliver modest, long-overdue minimum safe staffing standards for nursing homes. U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Ranking Member of the Health Subcommittee, slammed the legislation, which was opposed by Democrats, for abandoning residents, who are suffering from insufficient nursing care in facilities that often prioritize profits over fair wages and resident well-being.

Specifically, the members submitted a public comment calling for changes to the “Interagency Guidance Framework for Considering the Exercise of March-In Rights” to ensure increased transparency, oversight, and accessibility of medical products invented through taxpayer-funded research and development.

Austin, TX—Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) released the following statement regarding Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) receiving the Nation’s first modernized Tower Simulation System—a visual database to better train air traffic controllers through simulated airport scenarios: “After multiple near-misses at ABIA, I'm pleased the Federal Aviation Administration has prioritized us for updated safety equipment and installed the Nation's first Advanced Tower Simulator at our airport. This is a modest first step in improving safety for travelers and enhancing training for air traffic controllers, who are often overworked, overwhelmed, and understaffed.

Washington—During a snowstorm after most of Congress had already departed, the House Ways & Means Committee today delivered more corporate tax breaks with the adoption of H.R. 7024, advancing the interests of corporate lobbyists over the needs of children. U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) slammed the proposal for failing to sufficiently improve the Child Tax Credit and lift millions of struggling families out of poverty and questioned the value of the corporate provisions.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) introduced bicameral legislation to phase out single-use plastic foam food service products, “loose fill” such as packing peanuts, and non-medical disposable coolers – materials known to cause adverse health effects and pollute waterways. The Farewell to Foam Act will prohibit the sale and distribution of these items beginning January 2026 while aiming to support the transition to alternatives.

I voted “present” for H. Res. 894, not for a lack of commitment to condemn antisemitism and the Hamas atrocities as well as the outrageous examples of violent antisemitism referenced in the Resolution, but because of some of the language tucked into this measure and some that is omitted.
