Trump Not in Handcuffs Because Investigation was Handcuffed: Doggett Responds to Mueller's Testimony
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chair of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee and House Budget Committee Member, release the below statement regarding former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's testimony today:
"President Trump was not placed in handcuffs because Mueller's investigation was handcuffed. The only reason that he could not indict Trump, as Michael Cohen was indicted, was because the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) prevented the indictment of a sitting President. Election to the highest office means you should be held to the highest standard. Not the lowest. We cannot allow this President—who Mueller acknowledges obstructed justice, is continually untruthful, and actively welcomed Russian aggression—to trample on the democratic system we rightly cherish. Given the rampant lawlessness of this President, it is time for Congress to do what Mueller was not permitted to do: Demand some accountability, now by opening an impeachment inquiry."
