Statement on Trump Drug Importation Plan: Narrow Tweaks Won't Make a Dent

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chair of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, released the following statement about President Trump's importation plan:

"Three years late, with drug prices continuing to soar, Trump finally takes narrow action. Whether this will actually result in lower prices next year for any American is far from certain. While I have long supported the safe importation of prescription drugs, to effectively restrain monopoly prices much more must be done. As 50 Congressmembers have long ago requested, Trump has had the authority since day one to issue an executive order to lower the prices of the drugs for which taxpayers financed development. Trump should also follow the advice of candidate Trump and support Medicare negotiation legislation. There is no miracle drug to cure price gouging, but tweaks at the edges will barely make a dent."
