Statement on Gun Safety Legislation: Modest Step Forward, but Bolder Action Needed to Save Texans’ Lives

Washington, D.C. – As the House votes right now on the bipartisan gun safety package, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) released the following statement:
“I am reluctantly voting for this weak legislation, which offers little benefit to Texans endangered by gun violence. It won’t stop another Uvalde or El Paso because implementing its major provisions are dependent upon Governor Abbott and the Republican Legislature, who don’t want it to work. Nor does this measure reduce either weapons of war nor the large magazines used with them to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Still, this first, very limited victory over the gun lobby in decades does represent a modest step forward for gun safety advocates that may save some lives for those residing in areas with responsible state governments. Clearly, we need much bolder action to stop the terror of gun violence.”
