Shall Means Shall: Congressman Doggett on Obtaining President Trump's Tax Returns
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Lloyd Doggett, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee and serving on the Joint Committee on Taxation and the Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee, released the following statement regarding today's request to obtain President Trump's tax returns. During the last Congress, Congressman Doggett offered six motions to obtain the President's tax returns, all of which were blocked by Republicans. At a recent hearing, he challenged Treasury Secretary Mnuchin regarding his statutory duty to release President Trump's tax returns.
"After two years of Republican coverup and three long months in this new Congress, today's request represents a strong beginning. The statutory ‘shall' means ‘shall.' Because they have no discretion, Secretary Mnuchin and the IRS must promptly fulfill their ministerial duty. If the President insists that he is above the law and directs that the unequivocal mandate be ignored, we should move forward immediately with legal action. Though I have sought a request broader as to both time and businesses, Chairman Neal has provided a narrow, well-reasoned request."
