Washington, D.C.—Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) announced $15 million in federal funding for Austin Energy to install publicly accessible electric vehicle charging ports across neighborhoods, community centers, public schools and other facilities. Rep. Doggett helped secure these funds through the passage of the 2021 Infrastructure Law.

“Austin is on an electrifying path to limit our dependency on gas-guzzling vehicles that pollute the air we breathe and contribute to the climate crisis we can feel. Electric vehicles cut costs for both fuel and maintenance.  This federal investment doubles the number of fast chargers in Austin and adds a total over 200 new charging ports. Since ensuring greater accessibility to charging stations has been one of my legislative priorities, I am pleased that we can begin to assure drivers the ability to readily recharge their vehicles whenever and wherever needed,” said Rep. Doggett.

“This $15 million grant is a game-changer for Austin’s transition to an electrified transportation system that prioritizes accessibility and equity for everyone in our community,” said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. “Austin has already established itself as a leader in electric vehicle adoption, and this investment in charging infrastructure will ensure our city remains at the forefront of clean transportation innovation.”

Rep. Doggett was previously recognized by national nonprofit, Plug in America(link is external), with an award for his efforts strongly championing clean transportation and working legislatively to incentivize electric chargers.
