Remembering Bill Wittliff
Austin, T.X. — Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) released the following statement in memory of Bill Wittliff:
"Bill Wittliff was a Blanco County boy, who lived a remarkable life and suddenly left us too soon. Several years ago, when I recommended him for burial at the Texas State Cemetery, I wasn't expecting him to make such early use of the privileges. A remarkable writer, publisher, filmmaker, and photographer, he was full of good humor, great stories—some of which may have been true—and deep commitment to our community. Bill and Sally have been our valued friends for more than four decades. To Texas State, they donated an amazing Wittliff Collection of the history and culture of Texas and Mexico, including the work of many Texas musicians. Through his service on the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery Commission, he got a few Texans added, but his principal focus was on seeing that some ordinary Americans, not just the rich and famous, were included to reflect the true spirit of America. Bill and Sally have been a remarkable team—our hearts go out to her, to Reid, Allison, and to all of their family and many friends."
