Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chair of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, released a statement following Senate passage yesterday and House passage today of the CHIPS-plus bill (also known as the Chips and Science Act) about his “yes” vote:

“For decades, Austin has been a leader in groundbreaking semiconductor development—a sector with over 20,000 employees, adding over $3 billion to our local economy. Today, as CHIPS-plus has overcome Republican opposition to pass the House, we are unlocking essential federal support for our economic and national security. Now, I will continue to advocate for Austin as a natural fit for some of the federal resources made available through this law. Just as my predecessor, Congressman Jake Pickle, long ago brought Sematech to Austin, I hope we can make use of that same facility for more cutting-edge research and development.”

Notably, the legislation passed with 219 Democrats voting yes and only 24 Republicans voting for it, with 187 against—despite months of bipartisan negotiation for this package with such importance to the Texas semiconductor industry and our national economy.
