More than $712,000 for Communities In Schools of Central Texas AmeriCorps

Washington—Today, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett announced $712,352 in federal funds forCommunities In Schools of Central Texas AmeriCorps from the Corporation forNational and Community Service (CNCS). This grant will support 96 newAmeriCorps members, who will serve as mentors, academic supporters and servicelearning project leaders to more than 1,000 students in 3rd-8thgrades who have been identified as at-risk of dropping out of highschool. The members will serve in Travis, Hays, Caldwell, and Bastropcounties.

"Recently, Icelebrated AmeriCorps Week at City Hall with many young people, who are alreadymaking a big difference in our schools, homeless shelters, food banks, andnon-profits," said Rep.Doggett. "At a time when there is so much that is wrong with America,AmeriCorps is a bright light—helping all of us to know that there are so many peopleout there who care. These funds will fund more students helping to students toachieve their full potential through education."

"AmeriCorpsMembers who will serve for the next three years for Communities In Schools willwork on high-needs campuses with students who need additional support to besuccessful in school,"said Suki Steinhauser, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of CentralTexas. "Communities In Schools counts on these AmeriCorps Members to extendour reach so that about 1,200 students can receive high-quality support,mentoring, and tutoring."

Inaddition to this important funding for Communities in Schools, Americorpswill provide each person, who completes their services, $5,550 to pay forcollege or to pay off student loans.
