More than $345,000 in Federal Funds Available to San Marcos Fire Department

Assistant Fire Chief LenNored was pleased to hear news of the funding. "By temporarily takingcontrol of a traffic light system so emergency vehicles can proceed safelythrough an intersection with a green light instead of having to run a redlight, traffic preemption technology will provide two essential outcomes…preventing accidents and reducing emergency response times," he said.

The SMFD has worked closelywith the City's Transportation Division Manager to identify targetedintersections and to select a Traffic Preemption System that is compatible withthe City's existing traffic signal control hardware. City staff willoversee installation of traffic preemption hardware and software.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program is an importantcomponent of the larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the Nation's overalllevel of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards. These funds have helped fire departments across the country obtain much-neededemergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting andemergency vehicles, and training.
