House to Pass Provisions of Doggett Student Aid Simplification Act:

Increasing Student Access to Aid, Simplifying Process, & Saving Billions

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), spoke on the House floor to support passage of provisions from FAFSA legislation he authored and championed, The Student Aid Simplification Act, which were included as part of important legislation supporting minority-serving institutions.

"Our bipartisan bill both makes important investments in our minority-serving institutions and simplifies the financial aid and repayment process for millions of students at all universities," said Rep. Doggett. "We can ensure more students get the aid they need by requiring the Department of Education and IRS to do the heavy lifting for students by sharing the taxpayer information required for FAFSA completion. When more students can access all the education for which they are willing to work, students win, their families win, our economy wins. Investing in our students is one of the best investments we can make."

This legislation requires the Department of Education and IRS to securely share the taxpayer information required for FAFSA completion. This would eliminate up to 22 FAFSA questions and protect borrowers at risk of removal from income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This common-sense solution ensures federals dollars go to those who need them by enhancing interagency efficiency and making the FAFSA process simpler for the millions of students and families who apply for financial aid. The bill is also important to graduates repaying student debt. It eliminates the burdensome annual certification process for about 7 million graduates in income-driven loan repayment plans.
