The Hopeful and the Horrible: Statement on the 2023 State of the Union

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin), Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, released this statement at the conclusion of President Biden’s 2023 State of the Union:
“A hopeful message on all we’ve accomplished and all we can do by overcoming Republican obstruction. After another tough week of extreme weather in Austin, the President’s focus on dedicating federal resources to climate action and a clean energy future is particularly important. With so many health care challenges, it’s good to have a call to action on mental health, substance abuse, closing the Medicaid coverage gap, and protecting Medicare.
Wonderful to welcome Amanda Zurawski to Washington as Dr. Jill Biden’s guest, but horrible that she needs to be here. Her life was endangered by Texas Republican extremists with a radical law that denies the right to abortion—and denies the ability of physicians to safeguard women’s health. Now these same extremists are demanding a rigid national ban on abortion and restrictions on contraception.
We have a big agenda ahead—protecting progress, seeking opportunities for modest bipartisan action, and offering reasonable alternatives to Republican extremism.”
