Closing One Chapter of GOP Chaos, Opening Another

Washington, D.C. – This evening, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin), released the following statement regarding the close of the longest speaker contest since before the Civil War:
“After a week of chaos, the far right and the not-so-right Republicans have, on this anniversary of the attempted overthrow of our democracy, finally agreed to let McCarthy stumble into a much-weakened speakership. At last, we are released from this first Groundhog Day of doing the same thing over and over 15 times. My concern is less about Republican failures this week and far more on what their discord portends for reaching any bipartisan agreement on upholding the full faith and credit of our Nation, providing adequate support to resist Putin’s war crimes in Ukraine, authorizing reasonable funding for education and social services, responding to destruction of our climate and our liberties, protecting Medicare and Social Security, and more.
The stack of bills that I had planned to file this week are ready for next week, but I expect a rocky road ahead navigating through their obstruction and dysfunction.”
