The Beginning of Immigration Justice: Urging Passage of Dream and Promise Act

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) took to the floor of the House to urge passage of the Dream and Promise Act, to establish a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and those with humanitarian protection under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED).

"I rise on behalf of those who teach, who heal, who protect, who study. For those whose entrepreneurial talent advances our economy—for all our Dreamers. They have so much to contribute and are Americans in every way but on paper. For so many long years, they have been burdened with uncertainty because of the anti-immigrant hysteria whipped up by GOP fanatics—even as, in this pandemic, they have taken on so much of the essential work. In San Antonio, San Marcos, and Austin I have met personally with these Dreamers in Texas, where releasing their full potential through approval of this bill will not only free them but also benefit all citizens with billions in increased economic growth.

Today let us move forward to reject the GOP nightmare and achieve the dream so that these deserving young people may truly share in the entire American dream. And this bill must be only the beginning as we work to heal our broken immigration system and the millions whose futures and whose families have been scarred by its injustices."
