Washington--Today in a meeting of the Ways and Means Committee, Republicans put forward legislation to permanently eliminate the Social Services Block Grant program, jeopardizing vital support for children, the elderly and the disabled to help pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. Washington-- Ranking Member Doggett questioned witnesses, including Jonathan M. Stein of Community Legal Services of Philadelphia about exactly how damaging it could be to families with disabled children if we were to cut their SSI benefits.
"Mr. Chairman, the objective that you mention in your opening statement of helping families deal with these great challenges that they encounter with a child, or children, with disabilities is a shared goal that we have. I also welcome efforts to ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Supplemental Security Income – or SSI – program. This is a goal that we share.
