On Rent Day, Trump Still Burdening Economy for the Elite: Doggett Statement on Trump Push for Meals & Entertainment Tax Deductions
Washington, D.C. – Today, amid broadening economic hardship from the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, released the following statement in reaction to President Trump's tweet calling for reversing a provision of the 2017 tax bill which incentivized businesses to spend money at restaurants:
"As so many Americans find themselves unable to pay their first-of-the-month bills, once again, Trump prioritizes elites—with their two-martini lunch and night on the town. Incredibly inefficient way to assist small businesses, but helpful to those who could enjoy a tax break for extravagant visits to Trump properties. Entertainment venues are currently closed to protect public health after Trump's multiple coronavirus failures, not because of insufficient tax breaks. So many better ways to use the estimated $23 billion cost of what Trump proposes."
