Real Prescription Drug Reform: No Patient Left Out, No Price Gouging
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chair of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, reacted to today's reintroduction of the prescription drug pricing bill, HR 3, and on the need for strong, comprehensive protection from pharmaceutical price gouging:
"Since HR 3 was first approved in the House nearly 18 months ago, thousands of drugs have seen price spikes, more patients have cut pills and skipped prescriptions, and Big Pharma has received over $20 billion in taxpayer funds to develop COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics along with monopoly power to spike prices on booster shots. Real reform means: repealing the existing prohibition on government price negotiation, expanding the number and type of drugs to be negotiated, ensuring that negotiated prices and price spike protections are available for all, including the uninsured, reasonably containing launch prices, and considering during negotiation the role of taxpayer-funded drug research. Real change means: no patient left out or left alone to suffer or die for lack of medicine."
