CBS Austin: Rep. Lloyd Doggett talks about meaning of January 6th anniversary

January 6, 2023

It's been two years since the US Capitol came under attack (link is external)by thousands of pro-Trump insurrectionists, the biggest attack on American democracy in our lifetimes.

Two years since the failed insurrection at the Capitol -- the House of Representatives was hashing through Kevin McCarthy’s bids to become Speaker of the House(link is external).

“There are some of the people that were most opposed to getting the speakership, who if they did not participate directly certainly condoned what happened,” said Austin’s Representative Lloyd Doggett, who talked to CBS Austin about the January 6th anniversary. “What a tragedy. The damage done to our democracy is lasting. The horror of seeing our Capitol assaulted,”

His newly elected Democratic colleague and former Austin city councilmember Greg Casar tweeted (link is external)this remembrance today.

Republican counterparts Republican Michael McCaul and Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn said nothing about the grim anniversary on Twitter.

There were central Texans in that crowd at the capitol two years ago.

“I didn't go inside; I was outside all the time I was taking pictures,” Rocky Hardy told CBS Austin(link is external). Hardy took an immunity deal and testified against a rioter, a member of the Texas 3 percenters. “The main stipulation is that I have to tell the truth, you can't lie. If you lie, then you just killed your deal and you're subject to just about anything.”

Insurrectionists claimed they were egged on by Donald Trump. “We're going to walk down to the Capitol,” Trump told the crowd that day, “Because you'll never take back our country with weakness,

To this day, he falsely claims that the 2020 election was rigged.

“It was embarrassing to have a visit by the FBI. It's not something I ever thought would happen in my life,” Hardy said.

The fallout continues. Today, Representative Doggett says there's a link between developments in the House and what he thinks is chaos to come. “I think these rule changes and secret deals to get that last vote really do portend trouble.”

Representative Doggett says the House will reconvene at 9 pm and take what will be the 14th and possible final vote.
