Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) is concerned by new reports regarding asylum-seeking mothers whose children were seized from them and who are being detained near Austin, Texas, which indicate that they are being denied release even after successfully showing at a preliminary hearing that they have a “credible fear” of returning to their home countries. While detained, they cannot be reunited with their wrongfully removed children. Congressman Doggett has made the attached official inquiry to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding this apparent new Trump policy that appears designed to prolong separation and offered the following related statement:

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) spoke on the floor of the House today on his limitations amendment that would have prevented military bases from being turned into child internment camps, joined by 41 of his colleagues. But his effort was blocked in the Rules Committee on a party-line vote, as Republicans prevented its consideration on the floor of the House.

The Trump administration’s new tax form, which Republicans celebrated being the size of a postcard instead of the standard two pages, could end up leading to additional paperwork for millions of Americans. A draft copy of the new 1040 income tax form obtained by The New York Times showed that while the new tax form is smaller, it will require additional paperwork for multiple popular deductions, including student loan interest. Taxpayers will now have to search for these deductions, which are available on one of six separate worksheets.
