Reaction to Barr’s Press Conference on Mueller Report

Washington, DC — As reaction to the release of the Mueller report and to Attorney General Barr’s press conference this morning, Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) released the below statement:

“Instead of chief law enforcement officer, the Attorney General has become the excuse-maker-in-chief. To avoid being ostracized like Sessions, Barr seeks Trump’s trust while forsaking the public trust. He serves as the taxpayer-paid, personal attorney ‘fixer’ that Trump has always wanted. Like the continued handiwork of Republican congressional enablers, Barr’s propaganda and delays serve to feed the Trump formula: more tweets, less truth. Yet even Barr concedes extensive Russian aggression against our democracy—aggression, which Trump refuses to acknowledge or defend against.”

This year, Congressman Doggett authored legislation to ensure that the Attorney General cannot impede public release of a Special Counsel’s report. The Special Counsel Transparency Act is the House companion to a bill introduced by Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). Congressman Doggett will have an additional comment after reviewing those portions of the Mueller report that Barr has belatedly made public.
