President’s Tax Returns Reveal He is a Taker, Not a Maker; Show Freeloading for Personal Gain at Taxpayer Expense

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee who vigorously sought congressional action to obtain President Trump’s tax returns, released the following statement on the major revelations regarding the President’s tax returns published tonight by The New York Times:

“Trump hides his tax returns because, unlike most working Americans, he is a freeloader who doesn’t believe in paying taxes, only personally benefiting from taxes others pay. Most any American who pays taxes has paid more than Trump. He is a taker, not a maker. This impressive investigative journalism has uncovered what Congress failed to accomplish—disclosure of what a phony loser Donald Trump really is and his desperate need to continually seek personal gain at taxpayer expense. And the chaotic way in which he is directing our government and failing to address the pandemic killing so many Americans is reflected in the multiple failures shown in his losing business empire.”

Since the beginning of the Trump Administration, Congressman Doggett has pressed for the release of President Trump’s tax returns; during the last Congress, Congressman Doggett offered six motions to obtain the President’s tax returns, all of which were blocked by Republicans. When offering one of these amendments in the Ways and Means Committee, he asserted that Trump must at least meet the “Nixon standard,” since “even Richard Nixon invited the Joint Committee on Taxation to review his tax returns, explaining that ‘people have got to know whether or not their President is a crook.”

In a hearing last spring, Congressman Doggett challenged Treasury Secretary Mnuchin regarding his statutory duty to release President Trump’s tax returns.
