KXAN: Grant helps Austin veterans find homes
Lisa Garcia, vice president of assisted housing for the Austin Housing Authority, said the grant will allow the department to aid an additional 50 veterans move from the streets and shelters into stable housing.
“This grant helps subsidize the rent so it’s affordable and connect veterans with necessary services so they can thrive in the Austin community,” Garcia said.
The award is largely a result of the Housing Authority’s success serving veterans and streamlining services that help veterans quickly get affordable housing.
The grant comes from federal funds under the HUD-VASH program.
The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 106,558 veterans are homeless on any given night and approximately twice that many experience homelessness over the course of a year.
According to the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients, veterans account for 23 percent of all homeless people in America. This grant is big step in ensuring all who have served this country have a secure place to sleep.
